This small village which had four large estates in the 1 3 th century is nowadays especially known for its pilgrim church of Crngrob , one of the biggest and most beautiful art monuments from the Gothic Age on the Slovenian territory. The church is positioned among the woods and can be seen from near and far. On the mighty church tower there is a well-preserved fresco of St. Kristof dated to the year 1464. The most interesting fresco on the frontage of the church is the "Holy Sunday" from the 15 th century. This is a sermon about the forbidden Sunday chores of farmers and townspeople presented in 47 scenes. The equipment of the church is also extremely precious. In the northern nave a part of the original Roman church has been preserved dated around 1250. The main alter is the biggest Barocque "golden" alter on the Slovenian territory, an excellent product of domestic picture and carving trade. It was manufactured by the Ljubljana master Mr. Jurij Skorn in the 17 th century and gilded by the picture maker from Skofja Loka Mr. J. Jamsek. The altar painting and the Way of the Cross are the works of Mr. Leopold Layer. On the path that leads you past the old village of Pevno (former Jaegerndorf) there is a red sign erected during the reign of the bishop Filip at the beginning of the 16 th century with Gothic frescos showing saint figures. After you have visited the magnificent building and its surroundings, we recommend a visit to the nearby tourist farm located under the church, where you will be served domestic delicacies in a friendly atmosphere.
Above Skofja Loka, which used to be the centre of the Brizine estate in Upper Carniola , the Castle of Skofja Loka dominates. Not long after the takeover of the territory of Skofja Loka in 973 the Freising bishops erected the original castle that was described in a deed dated from 1202 as a very solid castle (castrum firmissimum from Lonec). The earthquake in 1511 destroyed the major part of the castle. During 1513-1516 the bishop Filip ordered its renovation. The castle yard used to have a mighty quadrangle tower, the ground plan measures of which have been restored. Nowadays the castle exhibits a collection of the Hunter's museum, where you can see the historical, cultural, ethological and natural-scientific riches of the Skofja Loka territory.
Castle weddings also attract a lot of attention, mainly taking place on Saturdays.
